Congress is at it again, with a new draft food safety bill expected to go to legislative hearing June 3rd. While the details have yet to be worked out, it's looking very similar to HR 759, which suffered from the usual one-size fits all approach coupled with overly broad language.
Why is this a big deal?
This is an important (yet horrifying) example of ill-conceived, reactionary legislation harming small business. What I found particularly fascinating about this story is that the subjects started out trusting the government to do what was right, and ended up realizing their blind faith in Congress could cost them their livelihoods.
This is an excellent real-world story to share with your friends -- it's a great conversation starter, with a strong freedom lesson.

“I’ve been supportive of some of these [Consumer Safety] groups. I actually blogged about this safety issue in 2007, thinking we were just focusing on problem products. I didn’t realize how massive the law would be and how many products it would cover.†- Cecilia Leibovitz, Craftsbury Kids

I'd like to let you know
I'd like to let you know about a recent issue here in Wisconsin that might be of interest to your readers. We recently had a bill in the legislature to legalize the sale of unpasteurized milk in a farmer to consumer sale. It got through both houses before our spineless govenor Doyle vetoed it. The reasons given were related to the dairy industry in Wisconsin and the physicians group that warned how we were all going to get sick.
It's so disappointing when common sense things like this are struck down due to industry interests and double-speak. I would be interested in what you guys think about raw milk and if you have any experience with this type of thing, are the reasons given really a concern? I guess I can understand if our Medical Insurance is really set against it...I'm just not sure that the numbers really support these health claims and concerns.
