Monolithic agribusiness & biotech corporations like Monsanto are gaining more and more power over our food supply, thanks in part to Congress creating policies that give them competitive advantage while harming small farmers & competitors, but also because we consume their products every day, without knowing it.
Want to do something about it? Watch this video, then accept the challenge below:
Accept the Challenge:
I will not buy Roundup weed killer, and will instead use an alternative method of weed control. (Please fill out the form below to accept the challenge and see your impact added to our calculator)
Goal:
Get 4 friends to accept the challenge by filling out our Impact form (below).
Impact:
So... what kind of effect can we really have on a corporate giant like Monsanto? Well, if 50,000 people accept this challenge, and each person who accepts tells 4 friends to substitute their next Roundup purchase (assuming 1.33 gallon container) with a natural alternative, we'll divert $6.7 million dollars away from Monsanto -- that's a HUGE start!
See our impact so far:
Please make sure you fill out the Impact form (below) so all of us can see the cumulative power our individual efforts can have.
PLEASE NOTE: We like ethics and doing the right thing, and we promise not to use your information for anything nefarious. We just want to make sure our Impact numbers are as accurate as possible.
Background:
You may not have heard of Monsanto, but you've certainly consumed their products. They are a multinational agricultural biotech giant, and the world's largest producer of genetically engineered seeds. They are responsible for things like Bovine Growth Hormone, aspartame, and terminator seed technology (which renders seeds sterile to prevent them from being reused or saved for next year's crop). Monsanto is notorious for it's aggressive and heavy handed business tactics, questionable ethics, and - here's the best part - they are deeply entrenched in our political system, having spent $2 million on lobbying in the first quarter of 2009.
One major factor in their success is the fact that nearly all of us consume Monsanto products every day, without even knowing it.
For example... about half of our sugar supply comes from sugar beets. Monsanto introduced their genetically engineered Roundup-Ready Sugar Beets to the market last year, and this year, their beets will comprise over 90% of the US sugar beet harvest.
If you're concerned about the safety or long-term effects of genetically modified organisms, you should substitute conventional sugar with organic sugar, honey or evaporated cane juice wherever possible.
One of Monsanto's key products is Roundup - the #1 weed killer in the US. Monsanto has a whole line of products -including corn, soy & sugar beets - that they have genetically modified to be resistant to the toxins in their Roundup herbicide.
Recently, new superweeds have emerged that have absorbed the roundup resistant gene. This result is just one of the many concerns independent scientists have about genetically modified products (GMO), and is powerful evidence of the unintended and unknown consequences of introducing man-made and unnatural elements into seeds.

Genetically Modified foods
Genetically Modified foods has weakened the food chain and has caused untold deformity and sickness in our livestock. I watched a documentary about it and everywhere else in the world; people are educated and are given the CHOICE to consume or use alternatives at the least. WE in the USA is kept in the dark by the giant horses that control our economy and dictate what we use and eat, keeping us on a treadmill, feeding their bank accounts from food, drugs and ultimately our HEALTH effecting our health care which President Obama is trying to fix or modify yet again.
The problem, Reilly, is that
The problem, Reilly, is that although you wish to think most of the herbicides are washed off the food, leaving all well and good to eat...those genetically modified seeds have been mucked up internally, creating genetic deviations the likes of which this earth has never seen before...there ARE reasons for the natural genetic barriers which are in place within our world. The fact that these plants are resistant to specific chemicals means that said plants contain WITHIN them genetic markers of the very chemicals they are resistant to. How else would they NOT die when sprayed by the specific chemical? The plant does not read this chemical as foreign and it has a genetically engineered tolerance to it. Effectively, doing things like that changes the very genetic makeup (the 'code' if you will) of each and every single seed/plant that is manipulated in this way. Now, if YOU don't have a problem eating and consuming food with jacked up dna/genetics that's fine...however, Monsanto and their ilk prefer to make danged sure EVERYone has NO choice by fighting to keep labels off their products. i've always wondered, if they're SO proud of their products, then why fight so much to keep the average citizen in the dark and without proper labels on GM/GE products? What happened to an informed consumer in this day and age? People should have the CHOICE of the food they buy. I do not see this happening in our country and it angers me. Cross pollination also angers me. You have 2nd and 3rd generation farmers losing their Certified Organic status simply because of GM crops cross pollinating willy-nilly w/out proper safety protocol in place to protect the natural seeds and plants that do just fine as they are. That's a sad thing. And don't even get me started on horizontal gene transfer: http://www.i-sis.org.uk/FSAopenmeeting.php
Please educate yourself. Oh...and about your statement of a 'miracle technology' to feed the billions of hungry/starving people: It has long been known that w/out GM/GE food, our world provides WAY MORE than enough food to feed EVERYone on this planet. the problem is not the amount of foodthe earth produces, but the distribution of it. It's a HUMAN (and dare I say moral?) problem that perpetuates hunger in other, less developed countries. C'mon...you cannot be THAT naive....right?....RIGHT? But, I digress...
Very nice video and i truly hope to live to see the day that Monsanto and their ilk eat big fat CROW!
What exactly is the problem
What exactly is the problem here? Monsanto's products are used so widely because they are good. They allow farmers to grow more crops with less resources, making food cheaper for everyone. As regards so called "terminator" seeds, Monsanto has been pledged since 1999 to never commercialize this technology. Also, even if Roundup-ready GMO crops cause farmers to use more herbicides the statement the "those chemicals surely end up in the food we consume" does not logically follow from this. Most herbicidal residue can be removed by simply running water over your produce for a couple minutes. While studies have clearly shown a link to exposure to roundup and cancer, the real question is how much is the consumer actually being exposed to the roundup chemical, since it can easily be washed off before shipping or consuming. As to the question of unintended consequences, should we stop saving lives with anti-biotic medicine because it breeds anti-biotic resistant bacteria? Certainly if Monsanto's products create some super weed that destroys the crops and property of someone else, they should be held responsible, but should we really refrain from using a miracle technology to feed billions because of some vague worries about something we don't know will happen? Something which we might invent a remedy for even if it does happen?
I can't believe Reilly isn't
I can't believe Reilly isn't working for Monsanto or some other agri-chemical company. What real person would go to bat for a frankenfood manufacturer. But to answer the rhetorical question, there are lots of "problems here." Number one is people want to know what is in the food they consume and to know it's good for them. Increasingly, more people are caring about the implications of predatory corporations like Monsanto for the environment and for the future. So, Reilly whether you work in agribiz, or for pharma, or big international banks, no one's buying the bull anymore. It's over. We have to now focus on how to feed nearly 7 billion people sustainably, but once we break up the transnational corporations and the international banking cartels it will be easier to make progress.
Roundup is just the tip of
Roundup is just the tip of the iceberg...I remember here locally a couple news reporters were sued by Monsanto for revealing information about how they produce milk about ten years ago.

Great Stuff, Here's More Info
Great stuff, Shelly! I’ve signed on and have sent several friends to as well. I did a writeup on this, which includes several alternatives to RoundUp (all natural, organic, and safe) that my friend published on her blog here:
