France's highest court has ruled that US agrochemical giant Monsanto had not told the truth about the safety of its best-selling weed-killer, Roundup. The court confirmed an earlier judgment that Monsanto had falsely advertised its herbicide as "biodegradable" and claimed it "left the soil clean".
The company was fined 15,000 euros (£13,800; $22,400). It has yet to comment on the judgment. Roundup is the world's best-selling herbicide. Monsanto also sells crops genetically-engineered to be tolerant to Roundup.
French environmental groups had brought the case in 2001 on the basis that glyphosate, Roundup's main ingredient, is classed as "dangerous for the environment" by the European Union.
In the latest ruling, France's Supreme Court upheld two earlier convictions against Monsanto by the Lyon criminal court in 2007, and the Lyon court of appeal in 2008, the AFP news agency reports.
Earlier this month, Monsanto reported a fourth quarter loss of $233m (£147m), driven mostly by a drop in sales of its Roundup brand.

Considering Monsanto got CAUGHT this time red handed in act lying, is of no surprise and as facts now dictate, is of little to no consequence. Who else in CORP AMERIKA and or GOV'T does not lie? Really doesn't and isn't everybody now doing it? General consensus exists, better to cheat and to lie by trying to get away with or covering up something, hoping never to get caught or to be seen, and if you do, just pay the damn fine has now become the AMERIKAN way- is cost of doing business, since jail time never is an option. Nowadays seems like most BIG corporations and BIG gov't elected officials always get away with impunity no matter how harmful,destructive or sinister they all are. Their corp $ fine is meaningless, relative to Monsanto's extreme corporate greed and wealth. Speaks nothing of the volumes of lies they perpetrate here, there, globally if not elsewhere, Iscreated to enrich themselves with almighty now inflated dollars, always is at the other extreme expense of people's lives, their children, their children's children and environments health becomes the greatest cost of expense. How 'bout little known best kept secret, that roundup when used according to its own label directives does not necessarily kill all plants always as described within manufacturers literature. quite often the direct opposite occurs- the plant(s) don't always die, and most often instead these same plants mutate, is now due to their DNA damage caused by Round up. And to think we humans are now consuming most of our commercially grown agricultural food, (more reason to eat organic) has now all been spray treated with Monsanto Roundup before it hits our Kitchen table. How bout fact of GMO frankenfoods, Monsanto has created within its labs in name of furthering agronomic science, does little for consumers health, instead dupes its farmers into believing using Monsanto products will increase their $ revenues generated on the farm is healthy choice given the trade off is never once compared to the damage, destruction already being wrought known to exist as taking place by it occurring within human health, life and toxification of the environment. If Round up is as safe as Monsanto claims(it isn't), then why are its inert ingredients being kept secreted? Why is Monsanto corporation allowed to exist operating being sovereign within a nation that is a republic?

15,000 euros is pocket change to a large monster corporation the size of Monsanto.
How about banning them from selling their products in Europe? That would be a responsible response. After-all, if they lied about one product it is likely they lied about other products too so it would be in the public's best interest to outlaw them from selling all their products since none of their products can be presumed to function as described due to this confirmed incident of them lying.

They got officially now a slap on the hands, just to satisfy the minority of the public, which is even aware of that.
15K fine is like boring your nose for this company, even 150 million would have been nothing, they have a multi trillion business running.
What a disgrace, the ruling is a cover up, to make it look like serious - NOT- with such a ridicoules fine.
They should not be fined but instead put out of business right away.
As they have been shown to be liers and scumbags with a sinister genocidal agenda, no integrity and basically aiming to own patented food around the world. This criminals have been exposed several times, now the populations around the world have to act and reject their garbage products.
