1. Bring back the Barter system
Use your skills & time as currency: I have a friend who owns a hair salon, and trades haircuts for all sorts of things - her website, artwork for her salon, even legal work. I trade my tech services for everything from free drinks at the local pub to free petcare at the vet.
Estimated value of bartered services/month: $200+
2. Grow your own food
It's 3.99 for one red bell pepper in the grocery store... it's free in your back yard garden. Enough said.
Estimated savings/month: $30
3. Buy day old baked goods from your local bakery
My bakery sells their day old items for $1. Even a day old, their bread is fresher and better than the stuff they sell in the grocery, plus about $4 cheaper for a loaf.
Estimated savings/month: $20
4. Cancel Your Cable TV
Most shows on network tv are available online for free, and if not, you can always have viewing parties at a friend's house or the local bar.
Estimated monthly savings: $125 - $175
5. Cowpooling
If you're a meat eater, buying a share of a whole cow from a local farmer is less expensive than buying individual cuts of meat from the grocery. Typically, You'll get a variety of cuts, with the average price per pound around $3. Plus you get the benefit of knowing where your meat is coming from, and what practices are used.
Estimated savings per 50 lb. of meat: $150
Oh, and added bonus? If you do these things, you'll be opting out of systems that are dysfunctional - like the mainstream food system - and supporting new and/or local systems that are better for all of us.
Here's how bartering is taxed (thanks to Doug Ghizzoni on Facebook for looking it up):
“If you conduct any direct barter – barter for another’s products or services – you will have to report the fair market value of the products or services you received on your tax return.â€

Engaging with rental service
Engaging with rental service could also be a good way to fight the recession that we have in our economic these days.
Here are some more tips: 1)
Here are some more tips:
1) Reuse food / water for your plants. If you wash rice in water for example, you can use the dirty, milky white water for your plants as they love the nutrients present in the water. Coffee grounds are also a great natural fertilizer and repel pests.
2) Call every company that charges you money (cell phone, cable, gym) etc. and negotiate discounts. I called my cell phone company and got 15% off a month for being a college alumni.
3) Try a "stay-cation" instead of a vacation, go somewhere more local, or try all inclusive cheap Vegas vacation packages.
Car Insurance can cost a lot
Car Insurance can cost a lot if you owe money on your car or have full coverage. I switched to minimum coverage and shopped around (insurance.com is a good site) and now I only pay $19 a month for my auto insurance, which is great considering I'm 22 and drive a red sports car.
Also, motorcycles can save massive amounts of money. You can get motorcycle insurance for $5 to $20 a month and easily get 65 to 80 miles per gallon. I am trading my car for a bike soon.
If you drive a prius, try and
If you drive a prius, try and get a 2004 or newer one, there are less battery modules ( lower voltage) behind the rear seat, so there should be less EMF -- electric field -- it shouldnt be too bad for the driver, but may not be so good for back seat passengers ..
Buying things with cash will:
1) give you a better deal at the gas pump -- i heard that Chevron with Techron is the best you can buy - the advert. price is the one with cash, you slide the plastic and you'll notice you're paying a few cents more per gallon for the credit charge
2) pyschologically, spending cash and coins means you typically spend about 10-20% less than just sliding the plastic - which is so easy and you don't even handle the real money, just electronic digits going through the beast system for your further tracking to be used against you potentially ....
--------------------------------------------------
I did have one negative from using cash- a guy wouldnt refund me until he could get his corporate office to cut a check and i had to wait the weekend to do that, because he said 'we had a problem in the past with someone taking money out of the cash drawer??' .. ( small computer shop)....
This kind of occurrence is so few and far between that it is not likely at all to happen again and few stores I have ever dealth with have this kind of policy -- maybe the store worker was having a bad 'fiscal' day /week and being overly cautious with all the economic bad news/ layoffs being pounded into us by the media,... say it enuf times and people beleive the lie ...
Hi all, I'm glad to describe
Hi all,
I'm glad to describe here an interesting
type of earning. Can you imagine that one
may make up to 3% a per day through investments without limitations in sums ?
I mean that even having US$1.000,00 one may earn the same amount in a monthly!
If anyone gets interested welcome to visit my web site www.theinvestblog.com.
I can save you more than
I can save you more than $1,000.00 dollars... and this is how:
Buy all of your lighting from my small business at www.h-dotlogic.com. By doing so, you’ll be supporting a small business and not big corporate interests. For the purpose of full disclosure, the products are contract manufactured in China by lifelong friends of my wife’s family in Shenzhen. The designs are ours.
We are a company of Libertarians fighting to survive in the economic downturn. We believe our product is very reasonably priced and of high quality.
An example of our pricing is this:
One bulb we sell is a 5 watt bulb that equals a 45 watt incandescent or a 15 watt compact fluorescent. Our LED bulb will last approximately 50,000-100,000 hours and at 50,000 hours, will be at 70% of its rated brightness and at 100,000 hours be at 50% of its rated brightness (LED lighting does not burn out like incandescent or fluorescents). In contrast, the incandescent will last from 600 to 1500 hours and cost 50 cents for the 600 hour product and around a $1.25 for the long life 1500 hour product. The price for the incandescent over 50,000 hours is around 42 dollars just for the light bulb and cost over 200 dollars for the electricity. The fluorescent will last anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 hours but if you have it in a socket where it is facing up, it will shorten its life. Also, leaving fluorescent lights on 24/7 will greatly shorten their life by at least half. But let’s assume the life is a nice 9,000 hours, you'd need 5 and 1/2 CFLs to replace 1 LED bulb. The product cost over a 50,000 hour lifespan will come to around $22.00 dollars while the electricity cost for a 15 watt CFL will be over 66 dollars. Now, for the comparison. The 5 watt LED bulb I am using in this comparison costs 22 dollars + tax and shipping which raises the price to approximately 28 dollars. The electricity use over 50,000 hours costs around 22 dollars. Total product cost for your incandescent is $242 dollars. For the fluorescent, the cost totals around $88.00 dollars and for the LED bulb, the total operating costs comes to a measly $50.00 dollars.
Taking our savings for the average home that has 30 lights, that comes out to a savings of over $1,100.00 dollars.
So there you go. My company could potentially save you more than $1,000.00 dollars.
As an added side bonus, you won't have to call Hazmat if you break one of our products... there's no mercury in them or any other hazardous substance to worry about.
Saving & being Conservative
Saving & being Conservative is Fine BUT do u know or realize WHO got us into this MESS ?!! it's the Conservative republican Mr. W for War Bush - who not only made his sec. of state go to UNO & LIE about WMD but cared less what UN has to say and "kind-a-forced" other countries to go with him to Baghdad to catch BinLaden while he is enjoying his Freedom in Afghan !!!??!
Not sure when did spending BILLIOINS is WAR and Wasting TRILLIONS in deficit, become Conservative Republican party's policy but it's jut NOT the money & recession HE has created but imgine HOW many US soldiers actually DIED due to this. Not only US soldiers but poor Mexican, Canadian, UK, German & other soldiers died because of ONT NUT case.
So he spends Trillions of OUR Govt. money and Now we have to find ways to save a dollar here & a Dollar there ?!?!?!?
And in 8 - E I G H T Looooooog years, this is exactly what he did and did NOTHING - NADA - ZERO - for Health insurance and finally we have a guy who is GOD-SEND (really in this situation) and trying to do "SOMETHING" we have so much resistance ?!!!
WHERE did this kind of RESISTANCE go when MR.WAR-B was spending OUR money and Human Lives & dumping them in Baghdad ????
Shelly - WAKE UP !! And TRY to see WHAT REALLY Happened and WHY we are in this situation. It is IMPORTANT to know WHY since only then we can keep those people whoe "caused" this to SATY AWAY from policy making so we dont CONTINUE in this path of Spending OUR money in Trillions while we try to save pennies and "hand-over" hard earned dollars so the real crooks can find ways to spend in wars & have the nerve to stop others who are Honestly trying to do some Good !!!
You're trash and your
You're trash and your president is trash. You liberal idiots will spin anything to spew your verbal diarrhea. This was about saving money not politics. If Obama was half the man Bush was we wouldn't be even more in debt while GM executives vacation in the tropics on bailout money. As far as Obamacare, I hope you get it... not the nation, just you. So you can get on a lottery system like in Canada and wait to die. You trash.
You are an idiotic asshole
You are an idiotic asshole for making a remark like this and you wish you were half the man Obama is. I think you need to get your head out of your ass and think before you speak because you are not making any reasonable since, and don't even get me started on that monkey of a president Bush! Later for you dumbasses, I'm out! OBAMA YA'LL!!!!!!

The white or light background is too much light. You need a darker background,
Cloth diapers! For about $500
Cloth diapers!
For about $500 outlay (depending on how fancy you get), plus the cost of another two or three loads of laundry a week, you can diaper your current and future babies. That's compared to $1500 minimum for just one child's disposable diapers, if you potty-train early (which is also easier with cloth, by the way).
There are oodles of sites on the other benefits of cloth diapering, and as most of them will tell you, "These are not your grandma's cloth diapers!" Even the cheapest ones are easy to use.
Food costs can be
Food costs can be dramatically lowered by learning to cook, and shopping the perimeter of your grocery store, which will keep you away from expensive and unhealthy prepared foods. Some suggestions for learning how to cook:
--Buy a good basic cookbook like Betty Crocker or Better Homes and Gardens.
--Check out online cooking resources like allrecipes.com and cooks.com.
--Shop for expensive tools and spices online. You can save a bundle.
--For fun and practice, try making great dishes that you have had in restaurants. You may be surprised to learn that you can do better!
Re: shopping, a lot of people turn up their noses at Aldi stores, but they have terrific dairy, canned and frozen foods, condiments, etc. They sell something like 75% of the food sold in Europe, where people like to eat. They operate the trendy Trader Joe's stores. I have worked with a manufacturer who supplied them with a couple of items, and learned from this that they are rigorous as to quality and sell at very little mark-up. Not everything is great, but most stuff is; you have to try for yourself.
We but most of our groceries at Aldi's and have local sources for fresh meats and produce. We spend about $100 per week for four people, and food preparation is not burdensome.
Paid cash for an acre
Paid cash for an acre homestead and then planted it with papayas, watermelons and a veggie garden.
Planted mango, avocado and other fruit trees.
Use ag quality spirulina for fertilizer.
Raised a couple of hens.
Have a horse to ride, to mow the grass, and provide manure for the garden.
Stocked up on organic seeds.
Eat mostly raw organic foods to stay healthy. I buy veggies and soap at the farmers market. Eat no meat, no sodas, no fake processed foods, no GMO‘s.
I make a quart of organic green tea with Indian spices daily. Drink only 100% pure organic juices I make in the morning to take with me to drink throughout the day.
Living off the grid with solar and propane, I catch rain water and use a ceramic filter to make pure drinking water.
Bought an old MCI tour bus and converted it into a RV with cedar lined storage. Going to run it on veggie oil.
Cut up all credit / debt cards.
Ditched my gas guzzling truck and fixed up my old car to drive. Plan to install a hydrogen water cell to cut gasoline costs. Want a car that runs on compressed air.
Sued my lender for TILA and other violations to stop foreclosure. Ditching my mortgage and building a modest cabin.
No TV, no newspaper, no radio. Use Skype as an inexpensive computer phone.
I write books on health and spirituality and offer angelic consultations and healings through my ministry at www.angelfoodbooks.com

yes - $250 a week .. what
yes - $250 a week .. what kind of living expenses - that is the biggest one - the housing, if there were no housing expenses it would be ez street , that's where they have us under thumb !
$1000 a month - wow, this would be hard for Shelly as she already blows half of it into the black hole of healthcare and sees nothing in return ...
Say you had your own healthcare and you live way far away from the city where living is much cheaper, say your rent /mortgage was $500 month .. now you've got $125 to pay for ins., gas, elec., and food .. man that is cutting it thin .. real thin ....

If I barter for a silver coin
If I barter for a silver coin with a face value of ten cents, then is the transaction valued at ten cents or the commodity value of the silver in the dime?
Apparently this issue is in litigation in Las Vegas right now.
That's an excellent list,
That's an excellent list, Shelly. In the years leading up to this my wife and I tried to plan ahead a bit, by buying a large enough plot of land to both live on and produce some income for us, around 14 acres. We are currently only using about 1.5.
1) We now raise chickens for our own eggs. Feed costs average around $0.05/egg or $0.60/dozen. A huge savings over the price for similar quality eggs at the grocery store. Also, the excess eggs we have no problem selling to friends/co-workers etc. at $3/dozen. With around 25 laying hens we're turning a small profit on the operation after the cost of feed. Mankind owes a big debt of gratitude to the chicken.
2) Growing your own food is harder than you think, but with time and diligence (and the right soil amendments) a well-designed garden will produce more than enough food for a small family. My advice, learn to can your vegetables for use during the winter.
3) Heat your house with wood. For the 4-5 months a year that we need heat in North Florida, having a wood-burning stove is like money in the bank. Firewood for eggs/veggies (or Hens) is a good barter opportunity. I estimate the stove paid for itself in the first 3 years I had it.
4) Install ceiling fans and raise the thermostat. Air Conditioners are air coolers... fans are people coolers. With ceiling fans on low, just enough to keep the air in the house moving, keeping our house at 79-81 degrees lowers the summer energy bill a lot.
5) Cook outside in the summer. Your air conditioner will thank you.
6) Dry your clothes on a clothesline. Turn off the dryer.
7) If you love to read... Booksfree.com is like netflix for readers. My wife could have bankrupted us if she actually bought all the books she's read this year. As a stay-at-home mom, she turned off the satellite and got herself a subscription to that with her birthday money.
Ta,
Kudos to all who have
Kudos to all who have deep-sixed the TV!! Not only a money pit, but an insidious propaganda machine.
Also, I knocked on my neighbor's door, and offered to share internet expenses, which I could have pirated for free, but I feel we need to get together and cooperate in the fight against overpricing.
I definitely haven't heard of
I definitely haven't heard of the Cowpooler one.
But I disagree that growing your own food is free. It may be cheaper, but time, soil and water isn't free.
How am I coping with the recession?
Obvious #1 : don't eat out, don't drink out, don't tip.
Obvious #2 : cancel any subscription I don't need, magazines, cable, whatever can be shared.
Some other ones that work for me, are:
* keep change, and use it, they add up to dollars
* have a separate bank account to save away what I don't spend (or cash it out and save it in a safe place)
* always watch out for deals, coupons, bulk or otherwise
* sell or trade what I don't need, don't be ashamed, everybody has trash, don't let it go to waste.
There's lots more, but more or less variations of the obvious, plus the line of thinking. It's YOUR MONEY, don't let others tell you what to do with it.
As for growing your own food,
As for growing your own food, good luck on doing that in Central Texas where there's constant drought...
i think you should spend less
i think you should spend less than what you earn, also change your mindset about needing things....also a watch tells the time, it does not show how much money you have in the bank
btw- the last time someone bought a full cow, they were cleaning their driveway for a good hour
Hey Shelly - Great tips. Too
Hey Shelly -
Great tips.
Too bad it took an economic downturn to wake people up.
Frugality and conservation are virtues. The hopefully will become habits will enhance daily life and last a lifetime.
The most important advice Granny can give is
Make Do
Do Over
or
Do Without
Here's some more -
Learn to cook from scratch and pack your lunch - everyday. That's what leftovers are for.
Ditch your cell phone. Who needs it?
Keep a couple of hens if possible. 2 or 3 laying hens are less trouble than caring for 1 neurotic house cat.
Buy good & only buy once. 1 good black Italian suit equals 10 off the rack cheapo outfits. Good will last for years.
Drive a prius ! I get around
Drive a prius ! I get around 50mpg and there is tremendous freedom in nearly not having to worry about putting money in the tank and when you do it's not much ( 11.9 g capacity) --
Prius is safe - it slightly auto brakes when you let off the gas, which means its charging the batteries -
Only thing bad about prius is the 2001-2003 early models accelerate slowly - so if your in the city with a bunch of college kids, be prepared for nasty looks, the finger, horns honking and an occasional yelled comment - but just put your thick skin on and remember the smile you have at the infrequently visited gas pump !
also - for any car .. if you
also - for any car .. if you put a K&N air filter, they flow about twice as much air and your car should improve gas mileage and performance --- they are reusable so you'll never need to buy another air filter for that car ..
Use Full synthetic motor oil - becareful, once you switch to this you need to stay with it , the car will be used to a nice low friction oil and run smoothly like that, if you switch back to dyno liquid, it will run rough and will not last as long - i think 1 to 5% increase from reduced friction and longer times between changes as well -
increase air pressure in tires .. if you dont mind a little bumpy ride, you can do 40 PSI .. at least put a few more PSI than 32 on your tires ! this can give very good mileage improvement.
DRIVING HABITS:
learn to keep your foot OFF of the break as much as possible ! accelerate when you have to but coast as long as you can -- don't be like granny or nervous nelly, with the foot going immediately from the gas to the break, - that is really annoying - i mean most of the time it's not necessary to break that fast , the car will gradually break and then you break when you must to avoid the car in front of you or the intersection ... no jackrabbit starts to 1/4 mile drag the person in the lane next to you ..
let the car warm up before you beat it -- at least a minute before you rev it up if you can.. drive immediately but as long as you can, prolong hard acceleration the better to get the operating water temp at 180 F or so ..
driving over about 65mph begins to reduce mileage quickly, depending on wind/ aerodynamics .. the mileage goes down real fast over 70 .. unless you've got a plane to catch, try and keep it under 75.... ?
a TOM TOM or other gps guidance system, touch screen with user friendly access can be a very good aid to get you where you're going, take the stress off and allow you to think about your driving habits better ! -- they can save you a lot of miles with shortcut's you wouldnt normally take as well ...
